Freda Thornton's career with McDonald's began in 1980 as a crew person. She spent only a short time in this capacity before her leadership skills were recognized and she was asked to enter the McDonald's Management Training Program. She spent 21 years in various progressive positions within McDonald's Corporation, specifically within the Norfolk region.
In 2001, FWL & Sons was formed and Freda became an Owner/Operator in the Greater Richmond Area operating two McDonald's restaurants. She became the first black female Owner/Operator in the state of Virginia . In 2004, FWL & Sons was afforded the opportunity to acquire two more McDonald's restaurants.
Freda is currently the treasurer for the regional chapter of the National Black McDonald's Owner Association, she sits on the local Richmond Owner/Operator executive board, as well as the Ronald McDonald House Executive Board.
Freda has received numerous awards throughout her career as a corporate employee as well as an Owner/Operator, but the award that is most dear to her is The People Award, which Freda is a three time recipient. The People Award honors the top Owner/Operator who truly embraces their employee's development.
Freda lives by the mantra, “to whom much is given much is required.” And it is a reflection in her efforts within the community. She has made countless donations and has volunteered her time on several occasions. Freda truly believes in the value of education, at each of her stores, one high school senior is selected to receive a $500 scholarship to attend college the following year.
Freda received her B.S., M.S., and PhD all from the School of Hard Knocks. She has 3 sons, Devon , Rodney, and Andre. |
